Offshore Weather & Routing Seminar
The objective of this seminar is to provide practical training suitable for experienced sailors who are planning to participate in offshore races or passages which meet the criteria for World Sailing's Offshore Special Regulations Category 1. This is not a basic weather course. The material is paced for participants who have considerable experience with coastal marine weather and who have completed the recommended pre-reading on offshore weather.
Content & Format:
- Introduction to offshore and high seas weather, with a practical emphasis on the North-East Pacific and summer passages between Cape Flattery and Hawaii; classroom format.
- Introduction to methods and systems used for obtaining offshore and high seas weather information onboard; with practical examples using Sailmail and Saildocs services; workshop format.
- Introduction to route optimization using GRIB weather files, boat polars, and software tools; with practical examples using Expedition software; workshop format.
Material:
- Pre-reading recommendations (obtain yourself, read one of):
- Modern Marine Weather, David Burch,
- Reeds Maritime Meteorology, Ives/Cornish,
- equivalent material or knowledge.
- Seminar material will be provided in class.
- Participants will need a laptop computer with current Windows software for the practical exercises.
- A free demonstration copy of some software may become available for installation on the laptop in advance of the seminar.
Terms and Conditions:
- Advance registration may be offered to eligible crew of eligible boats; the organizers may cancel ineligible advance registrations.
- More than 7 days before the seminar/class start date, registrations are cancellable and refundable; a 20% administration fee will be applied.
- 7 or less days from the seminar/class start date, registrations are non-cancellable and non-refundable.
- More than 3 days before the seminar/class start date, you may transfer your registration to another qualified person, provided that you have notified the organizers by email to events@vicmaui.org and received an transfer approval email.
Pricing:
- The early bird registration price is $300.00 per person.
- The regular registration price is $400.00 per person.
- Lunch is included on both days.
- Prices are in Canadian dollars. GST (5%) will be added.
