Ballymack Arrives in Maui
by Richard Ballantyne, July 23rd, 2012
Mike Cormack's Ballymack, a traditional Hans Christian 48 hailing out of West Vancouver Yacht Club, becomes the second finisher in Cruising Division with an elapsed time of 18 days, 11 hours, 41 minutes.
A noticable difference between the racers and the cruisers the emphasis on performance. They both value performance, but with different emphasis. Double Take and Terremoto crew talked performance as a function of VMG while hurdling down waves at life-threatening speeds. The crew of Ballymack focussed on performance in the galley. Their highlight was the bison rib-eye and the ultrafresh sashimi from a tuna hoisted aboard. That said, the Ballymack did perform when it needed to, weathered the heavy stuff as easily as you would expect, and provided enough sailing to make it a lifetime adventure for all aboard.
